Keeping the Teammate app up to date

Getting StartedAll usersVerified 12 Oct 20263 min

Each new version of the Teammate app brings fixes and new features, so it’s worth keeping it up to date. You don’t have to remember to check. The app looks for a newer version when it starts, and about every five minutes while it’s open, and lets you know when an update is waiting.

This applies to the Teammate app on iPhone and Android phones, and to the OnSite visitor sign-in app on kiosk tablets.

Update available: when you can choose

When a new version is ready, you’ll see an Update available prompt. In the Teammate app it’s a small banner; in the OnSite app it’s a dialog. It gives you two choices:

  • Update opens the App Store or Google Play, where you can install the new version.
  • Remind me next week hides the prompt for 7 days, and you carry on as normal.

If an even newer version comes out during those 7 days, the prompt comes back straight away.

Update required: when the update is mandatory

Sometimes we make an update mandatory, so everyone needs the new version to keep using the app. If your app is older than that version, you’ll see a full-screen Update required screen instead of the banner.

  • It can’t be dismissed. There’s no close button and no reminder option, and the Android back button does nothing.
  • It only appears when you open the app fresh, or after the app has been idle for more than 10 hours. It never pops up in the middle of something you’re doing.
  • Once you’ve installed the update and reopened Teammate, the screen is gone.

What you will see:

  • The heading Update required.
  • A short message naming the version you need, for example “Teammate 4.0.9 is required to keep using the app. Update from the App Store, then reopen Teammate.” On Android it says the Play Store.
  • A smaller line comparing the two versions, for example Installed 4.0.8 · Required 4.0.9.
  • One button: Update now. It opens Teammate in the App Store or Google Play.

Updating on your phone

  1. Tap Update now on the Update required screen, or Update on the Update available banner.
  2. The Teammate listing opens in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  3. Tap Update — it may say Get or Install — and wait for it to finish.
  4. Reopen Teammate. The prompt is gone and you’re on the new version.

No Update button in the store yet?:

Stores can take a little while to show a new version. Pull down to refresh the listing, or try again in a few minutes.

On an OnSite kiosk tablet

On an OnSite kiosk tablet, a mandatory update shows an Update required dialog with a single Update button.

Tap it to open Google Play on the tablet, then update OnSite there. Some kiosk tablets are locked down so the Play Store can’t open.

On those, the dialog reads “Ask your administrator to update OnSite on this tablet”.

An administrator needs to update the app on the tablet by hand, and the dialog stays until they do.

Our Setting up an OnSite kiosk device article covers how kiosk tablets are set up.
